Soap – a product with ancient origins
The earliest soap resembled soft brown soap, with the oldest known recipe dating back to around 3000 BC. In ancient Egypt, oils were mixed with ash, shaped into lumps, and used for cleaning – remarkably similar to soap as we know it today. Soap in a form closer to what we use now first appeared in the Middle East around 500 AD. Despite periods when soap and water were frowned upon, it was here to stay.
